Mind's Eye Re: Search for meaning

I've read through all you guys' comments and some express ideas I totally share. What I find intriguing is that humans are the animals that feel this urge to create meaning, or find it, or recognize it. Some, like the existentialists, see the creation of meaning as the essence of our humanity. For them meaning is created when we consciously and deliberately make a choice. The meaningful life is the one which chooses to act, to engage, to live. But I also know people, and some who have commented here, for whom meaning is simply celebrating the flow of life - birth, growth, learning, working, loving, sex, children, friendship, and death. There is not some meaning which makes life meaningful; Life is meaningful simply as it is.

It is not so much what meaning we give, or find, or make, but the fact that we do so that lights up our humanity like a great solar flare.

What I see is that giving meaning to life, conferring meaning on life, whatever that meaning is, adds a brilliance to life. When we augment the purely raw experience of life with ideas of beauty, truth, sacredness, we are creating meaning which exponentially increases the level of pleasure in that experience. Meaning is a quality which heightens the value of other qualities of life.

Love, truth, beauty and sacredness are qualities of spirit which we have come to recognize, identify, and seek to foster in our ongoing creation of our humanity. I see these as vehicles of meaning. I see artists, dancers, musicians, poets creating many different kinds of meaning. Those who think and act with altruism and generosity, with kindness and courage are all creating meaning which enlarges and enhances the lives of all of us.
