In the kind of science I used to do, we tended to have physical entities and fairytales. It was all far more complex than this, but we used to ask questions like 'have you ever met infinity' - concepts like infinity became not real but mathematical structures with no physical meaning at all but with essential role in approximation of finite reality.
-- Gods, souls and much else we talk about in here are fairytales in this sense of not being physical entities. In what way can they help us as, say, the mathematical structures of the very small and very large in my kind of science (structural realism)? I don't find a lot of religion helpful at all, more or less on the lines of Tom Paine, yet do think there are pre-real structures that could help us live better. Anyone any fresh ideas on what these might be?
