Mind's Eye Re: how close are any of us to the 'deep green'?

The ethical-moral stuff in this is actually quite radical - I'd expect this group to shy away.  Wood burning is quite green, especially if we breathe in the smoke and actually grow and replant.  Probably the most radical element is that we have to see our lifestyles are responsible for much of the lousy stuff going on, though it's after this the really difficult takes over as we realise very little human behaviour is rational or even fair.  One or two people I know are saying it's such a mess we may as well just let what's coming happen and let whatever is next take over.

What we need is socially approved epistemic authority in which we can be islands - Spinoza hacked that one out as a secular society allowing freedom of religion - handy no doubt for the island of a 'heretic Jew'.  The old bunkers of my Civil Defence training were built to work for 30 days - now some of them are having apartments built in them for the protection of the super-rich.  The old 4-minute warning system relied on me being on duty, actually in the building with the Salisbury beeper (and switched on as the beep was very annoying) and able to get to the bunker an hour away, assuming my duties on Panda 5 didn't get in the way.  We did have 'bunker weekends' in which the selected worthies had to live in the ground, though we lived on carry-in food (or at least they did - I lodged in the local pub).  I guess we are as prepared for environmental or cosmic-launched disasters.

Amongst the thorny issues are population control, that some get by on 99% less energy than we do even when they live on top of the oil ... and we think bending the odd knee will sort it out.

As an island, I can "create" a pretty good world around myself (A more powerful entity could probably do a better job).  I suspect the people that have the bomb shelters installed have neglected to add a dentist to their stockpile of soups and non perishables.

Wood burning seems like a good clean replenish-able natural resource.  People get a bit antsy around chainsaws and wood splitters though.
