Mind's Eye Who are the spooks?

I'd be interested to  know what our general opinion is on who our secret services are and what they do.  I had some passing experience with a few, usually in military context.  The standard joke went a bit like this:

1. Who are the KOSBs?  = The Kings Own Scottish Borderers.

2. Who are the QOSBs?   = The Queens Own Scottish Borderers.

The British Army had many OSBS.

3. So what do we call Intelligence? = LOSBs.

4. And what does that stand for? = Loads of Stupid Bastards.

I was on many futile and utterly barking undercover ops that were nothing like James Bond.  There are some comedies by Charlie Owen that get nearer the mark.  What are our guesses on what SIS is and who it serves?
