Re: Mind's Eye Re: Book "I am that"

Molly, I love this quote from Campbell. It is really beautiful

[T]he universal doctrine teaches that all the visible structures of the world ... are the effects of a ubiquitous power out of which they rise, which supports and fills them during their manifestation, and back into which they must ultimately dissolve. This is the power known to science as energy, to the Melanesians as mana, to the Sioux Indians as wakonda, the Hindus as Shakti, and the Christians as the power of God. - Joseph Campbell

Found this in my mail box today.  Thought it might apply to this thread.  I don't really concern myself with the how or why or when of life any more.  I have noticed that most of the religious traditions have a mystical aspect, and, as Joseph Campbell says here, they all say the same thing with different words.

I am not sure the origins of "Do No Harm" tradition,,  Ii tend to find it more in pagan? traditions and I see it in beliefs that are highly respectful of nature but not necessarily stated in so many words..

Some say it is the natural law..  my problem with laws to many people feel that they are the exception and it is there for them to break as the law only applies to the other guy.. The Netherlands has some excellent examples (lol  was able to talk with a policeman that was off his coffee break as he spoke english and had to give me a ticket..  which the house insurance paid for.. ) hmm (great insurance huh.. lol) including me..  but I do try not to.

I find harm a strange unique word that covers many ideas.. it is easy to cause harm..  slaughter and animal for food causes harm to the animal..  at the same time the sacrifice of one to allow another to eat..  though it s harm I think it also falls within the natural laws..  I was sitting here as I wrote  without causing harm in its strictest  sense, life as we  know it would not exist for that mater the Universe as we know it all evolves from causing harm.

That said  I do believe that it applies to those that are able to control and guide there environment, we are responsible for the cause and effect we have on the environment ,,  for the simple reason we have the ability to care for it  and not squander the resources placed at our disposal..   and to use wealth to waste resources to create more wealth has a real problem..or for thrill seeking.. I tend to agree with Pope Francis  that wealth with out is immoral..

am going to have stop babbling so I can collect my thoughts..   (deleted bad joke or humor)

Allan, you have hit the nail on the head precisely when you say "To me the objective of I spiritual life is to create a better life for all of humanity if strays from that objective what value is it..  ??     to discuss and contemplate do no harm has great value."

All the ideas we often talk about can be a lot of fun to think about and discuss. But when it comes down to what actually matters in life, "do no harm" is probably one of the best ideas on which to base one's life. It is a lot better than most of the things people base their life on and who pursue those dreams and ideas at the expense of other people or of the earth, or of other creatures.
